The nature and origin of Mafic Mound in the South Pole-Aitken Basin

چکیده
Mafic Mound” is a distinctive and enigmatic feature 75 km across and 1km high near the center of the vast South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA). Using several modern data sets, we characterize the composition, morphology, and gravity signature of the structure in order to assess its origin. Mafic Mound is found to exhibit a perched circular depression and a homogeneous high-Ca pyroxene-bearing composition. Several formation hypotheses based on known lunar processes are evaluated, including the possibilities thatMaficMound represents (1) uplifted mantle, (2) SPA-derived impact melt, (3) a basalt-filled impact crater, or (4) a volcanic construct. Individually, these common processes cannot fully reproduce the properties ofMaficMound. Instead, we propose a hybrid origin in which Mafic Mound is an edifice formed by magmatic processes induced by the formation and evolution of SPA. This form of nonmare volcanism has not previously been documented on the Moon.

Connecting Lunar Meteorite Dhofar 961 to the South Pole Aitken Basin through Lunar Prospector Gamma-ray Data
Introduction: Lunar meteorite Dhofar 961, a complex, lithic-clast-rich impact breccia [1,2], was called out by [3-6] as a candidate for an origin in the South Pole – Aitken (SPA) Basin region of the Moon (the SPA Terrane) on the basis of its relatively mafic, but nonmare lithologic and major-element chemical composition. It also has an incompatible-element signature that differs from the KREEP-...
متن کاملMajor compositional units of the moon: lunar prospector thermal and fast neutrons
Global maps of thermal and fast neutron fluxes from the moon suggest three end-member compositional units. A high thermal and low fast neutron flux unit correlates with the lunar highlands and is consistent with feldspathic rocks. The South Pole-Aitken basin and a strip that surrounds the nearside maria have intermediate thermal and fast neutron flux levels, consistent with more mafic rocks. Th...
متن کاملVolumes of lunar lava ponds in South Pole-Aitken and Orientale Basins: Implications for eruption conditions, transport mechanisms, and magma source regions
In an effort to characterize individual eruptive phases and events, 86 isolated mare deposits (ponds) in the lunar South Pole-Aitken and Orientale regions were analyzed to obtain information on areas, volumes, and other characteristics. Deposits likely to represent single eruptive episodes have area mean values of-2000 km 2 in the South Pole-Aitken Basin and -1100 km 2 in the Orientale Basin. P...
متن کاملCrustal Diversity of the Moon' Compositional Analyses of Galileo Solid State Imaging Data
The multispectral images of the lunar limb and farside obtained by the solid state imaging (SSI) system on board the Galileo spacecraft provide the first new pulse of compositional data of the Moon by a spacecraft in well over a decade. The wavelength range covered by SSI filters (0.4-1.0 }•m) is particularly sensitive to the composition of mare basalts, the abundance of mafic (ferrous) mineral...
متن کاملCompositional heterogeneity of central peaks within the South PoleAitken Basin
[1] Using high-spectral and -spatial resolution Moon Mineralogy Mapper data, we investigate compositional variations across the central peak structures of four impact craters within the South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA). Two distinct causes of spectral diversity are observed. Spectral variations across the central peaks of Bhabha, Finsen, and Lyman are dominated by soil development, including the e...
